Digital marketing is no longer a popular phrase or a glamorous profession. It has now become a necessity of every business that wants to make a living in modern market. Big local brands to international companies, all people rely on digital solutions to find their customers, build trust as well as revenue.

In simple words, Digital marketing happens when you promote a business, product, service or personal brand with the help of internet and any digital media for example with search engines like google,  social media platforms, websites, apps, emails, online advertisements or with the combination of these.

Previously, the companies or any businesses depended on the traditional marketing methods like newspapers, banners, television advertising, and the word of mouth. Because at that time there were not any other options and to target the audience who is  more likely to buy the products or to use the services. Nowadays things are much more different.

When people started using the phones and the internet, things started to change. These days before buying a product or utilizing the services, people goes to Google, Instagram, reads reviews or watch YouTube videos to check whether the product is worth buying or this is what they're looking for. This change in consumer behaviour is what has made digital marketing to be so significant.

Digital marketing is powerful not only because of its wider reach, but also for its precision. The reasons that make digital marketing powerful are:

  • Global reach at a lower cost.

  • Highly targeted audiences.

  • Monitor real-time performance.

  • Measure results with data.

  • Enhance strategies on a regular basis.

  • Scalable and flexible.

This implies that marketing decisions are not a result of guesses. They are grounded on facts, behavior, and understandable insights.

To those who are new, one thing is necessary to be made clear here:

Most people think that digital marketing is just about posting on social media, running ads, and promoting all the products to all the people. No, it's not.

We digital marketers don't do that. Before we start to promote a product or service, we find our target audience, they are the people who are most likely to have an interest in that particular product or service.

It is a complete system that focuses on visibility, engagement, trust, and long-term growth. Marketing is everywhere nowadays and there are various types of digital marketing. Promoting a product digitally involves various processes, each and every process is integrated with the strategies and planning.

All these strategies and planning will change based on the  product that'll be promoted or the service, the digital platform will be used, based on the marketing goals and business goals, etc.,

Being a student, employed business owner, or even a person with a prospective personal brand, knowing what digital marketing is will make you make better choices in the online world.

Digital Marketing Funnel

The stages of digital marketing are often called as digital marketing funnel. It is a customer journey from the user to a loyal customer.

This is a  progress and result of digital marketing,

Digital marketing moves a user from stranger → visitor → lead → customer → loyal user → brand advocate.

Stages of Digital Marketing

There are four main stages of digital marketing. Those are,

  1. Awareness
  2. Consideration
  3. Conversion
  4. Loyalty

1. Awareness

As the name itself suggests, in this stage we make people aware of the product, brand, or service. This stage is really important for all new brands. Because if people are not aware of the brand, they will hesitate to buy the product or obtain the service.

What happens here:

  • Users face a problem or need but don’t know the solution
  • They search broadly or consume general content
  • Brand discovery happens for the first time

Digital marketing used in this stage:

  • SEO (informational keywords, blog posts)
  • Social media marketing (reels, posts, reach campaigns)
  • Display ads and brand awareness ads
  • YouTube videos and influencer marketing
  • Content marketing (blogs, guides, explainer content)

2. Consideration Stage

In this stage, the user will get to know more about the brand in detail. To help them understand our brand better, we create campaigns or marketing strategies specifically for this purpose. This is also one of the crucial stages which moves the customer to the next stage to take the desired action.

What happens here:

  • Users compare brands, features, and pricing
  • They read reviews, case studies, and watch demos
  • Trust-building becomes critical

Digital marketing used in this stage:

  • SEO (comparison and problem-solving keywords)
  • Email marketing (nurture sequences)
  • Retargeting ads
  • Webinars, product demos, and lead magnets
  • Social proof content (testimonials, reviews)

3. Conversion Stage

This is the decision-making stage, where users are ready to act. Once they decide to buy or obtain the service, the user becomes a customer. This is the most important stage since it results in the final marketing goal.

To make the conversion stage easy for the customer, there are lots of things to optimize, like the product page, checkout page, page speed, and mobile optimization. If a user faces difficulty in purchasing a product, they will probably abandon the purchasing process, so these are some important things to focus on in this stage of marketing.

What happens here:

  • Users show strong purchase intent.
  • They evaluate offers, guarantees, and CTAs (Call to Action).
  • A final push influences the action.

Digital marketing used in this stage:

  • Performance ads (Google Search Ads, Meta conversion ads).
  • Landing page optimization (CRO).
  • Remarketing campaigns.
  • Offer-based email marketing.
  • CTA-driven content and checkout optimization.

4. Loyalty Stage

This stage focuses on long-term relationships with customers. Marketing doesn't end with the conversion stage. After the customer makes a successful purchase of the product or obtains a service, if the quality of the product or service is good, they will continue business with the brand.

Good marketing is not only focused on promoting; it is our responsibility to ensure that we are providing a good experience to our customers to achieve success in this stage. If we succeed in this stage, as a result, we will get loyal customers who will act as brand advocates and recommend the brand to family and friends.

What happens here:

  • Customers expect value beyond the purchase.
  • Experience decides repeat purchases.
  • Brand loyalty and advocacy develop.

Digital marketing used in this stage:

  • Email marketing (newsletters, updates, offers).
  • CRM and marketing automation.
  • Community building (social media groups).
  • Loyalty programs and referral marketing.
  • Post-purchase content and support.

Why Digital Marketing Is Important for Every Business Today

These days one of the biggest mistakes that every business or brand makes is thinking that digital marketing is optional. But in this generation it's completely opposite, Digital marketing becomes the important consideration for all the businesses.

Here I want you to know the Marketing rule of 7,

The Marketing Rule of 7 means that a person usually needs to see or interact with a brand at least seven times before they decide to buy from it.

People don’t trust or buy from a brand the first time they see it. Repeated exposure builds familiarity, trust, and confidence.
